Hi, everyone:
Thanks for a great discussion this morning! I mentioned that I would find some resources about the recent LC policy to remove $v from subject authority records. Much of what I have seen is scattered across multiple mailing list discussions, but here is the official policy<https://www.loc.gov/aba/cataloging/subject/form-announcement.pdf> (pdf) from LC. They state at the bottom of the document, "There is no requirement for any institution to follow the Library’s practice of not using $v." However, as we discussed, their policy will have a ripple effect depending on how other organizations (like OCLC) choose to implement it.
In January, members of the ALA Core Subject Analysis Committee's Working Group on $v Retention shared its report of research findings and recommendations<https://docs.google.com/document/d/12sYgYhVSyM1nObY-QeH-VySjYHxoSQTEj2xwBFT…>. If you have any feedback for that group, you are welcome to contact Maya Esperson<mailto:[email protected]> from Aurora Public Library, who sits on the group.
Best,
Amy

Hi, everyone. I wanted to share this announcement for a webinar I saw on
AUTOCAT because it relates to the discussion we had about graphic novel
cataloging. It looks like it's free to attend, so if you have the time you
might want to pop in, April 21 at 11:30 Mountain. Registration link is at
the bottom.
Forwarded message:
The Graphic Novel and Comics Round Table (GNCRT) Metadata & Cataloging
Committee is pleased to host a virtual panel on April 21, 2026 at 1:30-2:45
Eastern/12:30 Central/11:30 Mountain/10:30 Pacific focused on local
cataloging practices for comics and graphic novels. Looking at how comics
and graphic novels are cataloged in practice, it seems like every library
does things differently. Why does your library do things the way that you
do?
In this webinar, we seek to bridge the gaps between specialized libraries
focused on comics/graphic novels, academic libraries, and public libraries.
Our panelists reflect this mission and include:
-
Keno Catabay (University of Colorado Boulder, University Libraries,
Principal Cataloger)
-
Stefanie Dennis Hunker (Professor/Digital Resources Librarian, Browne
Popular Culture Library, Bowling Green State University)
-
David Shay (Cataloging Librarian, Rare Books, University of South
Carolina Libraries)
-
Cynthia Barnett (Collection Development Manager, Birmingham Public
Library)
This webinar will be approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and will start with a
15 minute presentation on the results of a study on comics classification
practices. This will be followed by each panelist giving a short 1 to 2
minute introduction about themselves and their collections, followed by the
panel discussion.
